Twelve year-old Vendulka Wichta took out the prestigious on the spot poetry competition at the Feast of Poetry last Sunday.
Vendulka and the other participants were given a collection of words to turn into a masterpiece in just a couple of hours and that is exactly what the young poet did.
Vendulka called her work ‘A Grand Feast’ and said the idea came to her quite simply.
“The sheet was filled with words about eating and names of food so I decided that is what it had to be about,” she said.
On winning the section the youngster said she felt “victorious” when her name was read out and said she just likes writing.
“I like writing poems, I enjoy about writing them at school,” she said.
Other major winners on the day included Daphne Hargreaves in the open section for ‘Lady Writers’, David Meyers in bush poetry for ‘A Cocky’s Dream’, Kate Walker in the secondary section for ‘Happiness Is’, Kate Reid in the primary section for ‘Annoyed’ and Josie Platts won the infant section for ‘Snowflakes’.
This year there was 68 poems in the open section and 92 in the children’s divisions. The judges this year were Senior Lecturer in English at Charles Sturt University David Gilbey and children’s author Jane Carroll.
Organiser Lucy Bracher said the day was a great success.
“The day was an amazing, it was all positive. It was great to see so many children do very well,” she said.
Bracher wanted to thank all the organisers and those who made a special effort to participate in the event.
“Some poets travelled from far and wide to be involved, so we really appreciated everybody’s support,” she said.
