Cooma's blackspot solved with roundabout underway

19 Nov, 2009 09:39 AM
A plan to correct a notorious black spot at the Commissioner and Baron Street intersection is underway and should be complete by the end of the month.

All things going to plan, a new roundabout will be installed at the intersection to slow drivers down and guide them around the corner in a bid to reduce the number of accidents.

The lower part of Baron Street will remain closed until all work on the intersection is complete including upgrades to water mains underneath the roads surface.

Council water and waste water technical officer Mark Rixon said the works would see a 250mm main and a 200mm main replaced and a 100mm reticulation upgraded.

“The pipes were made out of asbestos concrete where as the new ones will be ductile iron, which is newer material,” Mr Rixon said.

“It’s one of the major feeds into the CBD, it’s nearly finished I think they will do the cut in next week.”

Mr Rixon said the work had been planned for some time and with the roundabout work going ahead was an opportune time.

Arthur Wilkinson works manager said the roundabouts construction would hopefully be complete by late November early December.

Work began on the intersection earlier this month.

Mr Wilkinson said he was not aware of plans to include plants in the roundabout’s design because it was too small to safely maintain the garden without disrupting traffic.
