NSW Greens Senator Ian Cohen announced an inquiry into rural wind farms last week. The inquiry will be conducted by the legislative council’s general purpose standing committee number five and chaired by Mr Cohen.
“Wind farming is forecast to deliver the State of NSW considerable growth in the renewable energy industry, increased regional job opportunities and reduced greenhouse gas emissions,” Mr Cohen said.
The committee will look at the role of utility-scale wind generation in reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by electricity production. The committee will encourage local ownership, control of wind technology and how best to meet Australian Government’s Renewable Energy Target.
“This inquiry is an opportunity for all stakeholders and communities to provide input into how NSW can ensure wind farm development balances social, economic and environmental objectives,” Mr Cohen said.
The committee invites written submissions, which close on Friday, August 21 2009. Public hearings and regional site visits will commence in September 2009.
