INMATES at Cooma Correctional Centre can access help to get back on their feet when the Department of Corrective Services launches their new offenders support program.

Director of community offender services Jennifer Blanch will present details of the program to Cooma-Monaro Shire Council at their monthly meeting on July 14.

Under the program up to 25 people can be assisted with long term rehabilitation that teaches them to obtain and retain long term accommodation, education and employment.

Corrective Services staff will supervise the residents of the program 24 hours a day seven days a week at the Henry Mortlock Centre in Vulcan Street.

The Department of Corrective Services said the centre aimed to ensure residents were well prepared and had the skills required to ease back into the community.

Residents are expected to pay board and lodgings and are encouraged to save 25 per cent of their new start allowance to assist with permanent accommodation in the future, undertake household tasks, assist with ground maintenance, participate in all programs and consistently demonstrate respect for all staff and residents.

Thirteen full time staff will be employed at the centre. The department will be advertising these positions within months.
