Local teacher recognised for teaching sustainabilty

4/12/2008 11:29:00 AM
MONARO High School teacher Dave Innes, was one of a select group of NSW secondary teachers who were invited to contribute to a new sustainability education project called Lessons from Teachers.

The project, conducted by the Faculty of the Built Environment (FBE) at the University of NSW, saw Mr Innes recognised as an innovative teacher in sustainability for his creative approach to exploring the subject with his students.

Mr Innes devised a project for his year 11 Design and Technology class that saw students create a model design of an environmentally friendly courtyard based on a currently unused space within the Monaro High School grounds.

Mr Innes' inspiration to address sustainability issues through his teaching is both personal and social. As he says: "We've got to think of our children's futures, not ours. By getting students thinking about sustainability now it may impress on them later."

Mr Innes work is featured on the website www.teachsustainability.com.au.

The Lessons from Teachers project and the website are co-ordinated by the University's FBE faculty and supported by the NSW Environmental Trust as part of the United Nations decade of education for sustainable Development.
