Monaro police capture jail escapee

07 Feb, 2012 08:24 AM
An escapee from Goulburn Correctional Centre has been captured by Monaro Highway patrol after being pursued by Nimmitabel Police to Delegate where he was stopped and later captured.

The 23-year-old prisoner escaped from the jail and was on the run sometime before 12.30pm last Friday when he failed to show up to roll call.

It is alleged the man carjacked a late model Mazda 3 from an elderly couple outside a Goulburn laundrette. He menaced the 84-year-old driver with a screwdriver before taking the car.

Police sighted the car on Saturday night in the Bombala region and a pursuit was initiated by the Nimmitabel police.

The chase ended in Delegate, where the man ran from the car into nearby bushland.

An extensive search was launched in the forest by police from both New South Wales and Victoria, including aerial support and help from the dog unit.

Monaro Highway Patrol captured the escapee at about 12.15pm on Saturday and took him to the Bombala police station where he was arrested and charged.

The Mazda was damaged when the man drove it off the road. The car was towed to Cooma Police station where it has been forensically examined and stored.
