More than 4,000 passionate car enthusiasts will descend on the Cooma Showground this Saturday from all over the country for Cooma Motorfest 2009.
Dennis Birchall said many of the vehicles and car owners themselves will be of a similar vintage with good reason.
“They have got character and soul, they are not plastic,” he said.
Mr Burchall, 59, has a 1973 V12 E Type Jaguar, which he has owned for three years after wanting his dream toy since he was 16.
“Passion is the word you would use. Some people choose to go on overseas holiday and when they come back it is over. This is something I get enjoyment out of every time I get in it,” he said.
Mr Burchall said for a car enthusiast there was never enough you could do to improve your beast.
“There will always be something but most people don’t have a spare $150,000 to hand to a mechanic and say, make it perfect. So, most people work on their cars themselves,” he said.
Events coordinator Rogan Corbett said more than 300 cars are expected at this year’s Motorfest with plenty on offer for car enthusiasts and interested observers alike.
“There will be a military display, trucks, stationary engines, bikes, dancing, Ernie Constance music, kid’s entertainment and the showground will be a major check point for the Snowy Ride,” he said.
Australian motor racing legend Leo Geoghegan will be the special guest on the day with more than 60 prizes and trophies up for grabs.
Corbett said this is the fifth Motorfest in Cooma with the event held every two years and once again he is hoping the Cooma Monaro Historic Automotive Club can raise some funds for the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research.
“We raised $6,000 last time so it would be great to do something similar again,” he said.
The car club will also have their cars displayed on the day including a ‘62’ dodge Phoenix and a Chrysler by Chrysler Coup.
