IN light of the number of accidents on the Monaro and Snowy Mountains Highways in recent months, travelling to Canberra from Cooma by car appears to be increasingly more dangerous.
Senior Constable Lloyd Benivento from the Monaro Highway Patrol at Cooma said drivers were often frustrated and attempted risky overtaking manoeuvres in unsafe areas because of the lack of overtaking lanes on the road.
"In my opinion the problem with the Monaro Highway is there is not enough overtaking lanes," Snr Cons Benivento said.
“So when you get an 'L' plater or a truck people are getting frustrated and overtaking over double lines or around bends."
Now that the snow season is over there aren't as many cars on the road but drivers are still recording high speeds.
"Two weekends ago near Michelago we caught four drivers exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 kilometres per hour," Snr Cons Benivento said.
Those drivers faced a $1600 fine, instant disqualification for six months and six points off their licence."
Snr Cons Benivento said car-pooling was not necessarily the solution.
"If there's an accident then there's four people in the car, other than the overtaking lanes the highway is not the problem, it's the manner of people's driving," he said.
Cooma Police's Highway Patrol Sergeant Rob Tapply said all roads had the potential to be dangerous, however his team has strived to make driving on the Monaro Highway as safe as possible.
"We're providing increased visibility and presence on the roads and have dedicated all available resources to combat speeding, fatigue, drink driving and constraint offences," Sergeant Tapply said.
"We had a big impact on winter traffic, but remind motorists to slow down and drive safely," he said.
