Children with Asthma who use the Monaro Mobile Preschool will soon be able to breathe easy, after the centre won a Dyson vacuum cleaner.
The preschool was granted the asthma friendly vacuum cleaner when the Cooma community showed their support in an online poll. Parents were sent a letter home, asking them to consider voting so the Monaro based preschool could obtain an asthma friendly vacuum cleaner, and they just happened to be randomly selected.
Preschool director Kerry Whish was grateful to receive this gift.
"For a non for profit organisation like us to win a vacuum cleaner worth almost $1,000 is a big deal.
"I would like to thank the community for helping us provide an asthma safe centre," she said.
The preschool has also been granted an Asthma resource and information pack in the hope of gaining accreditation as an asthma friendly childcare centre.
Preschool staff member Debbie Greenwood said the centre had an old vacuum cleaner that was falling apart before the new prize came along.
"It will be nice to have a quality new product that will effectively clean up all the dust and dirt to enable the children at our centre to breath easier," she said.
One in six Australian children suffer from Asthma and the Dyson company has been a partner of the Asthma Foundation of Australia since 1999.
Asthma Foundation of Australia CEO Robin Ould said many young children are rushed to hospital each year, so parents and teachers need to remain vigilant.
"With more children being cared for outside the home, it's important that careers as well as parents hear the message that asthma is a serious illness that can be managed," Ms Ould said.
Dyson and Harvey Norman intend to donate 406 vacuum cleaners to a variety of child care centres around NSW.
