Sadly missed

THERE has been an outpouring of grief in Cooma following a tragic car accident on the Monaro Highway north of Bredbo, which involved local couple Erica and Erich Witt.

Last Wednesday Mr and Mrs Witt rose early and left Cooma at 5am destined for a dentist appointment in Sydney.

They were just one kilometre past Bredbo when the car they were driving collided with a truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Mr Witt, 76, died as a result of the accident and Mrs Witt, 71, was taken to Canberra Hospital in a serious condition.

The couple had celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at Miss Heidi's Tea House barely a week before.

Glowing tributes have been pouring in for the grieving family about a man, who they say, will never be forgotten for his kindness.

Family friend Rosemarie Egidy shared the afternoon playing cards with Mrs Witt before the accident and spoke to the Express about "the gorgeous people known and loved by everyone they touched."

Mrs Egidy said the couple moved to Cooma during the Snowy Scheme in the 50s, ran a delicatessen in Sharp Street and raised three sons.

Mr Witt, a retired taxi driver, was an active member of Litter Pickers, a clean up group in Cooma.

"He went up the road every few days to clean up the litter, I think that was really admirable at his age," Mrs Egidy said.

"They had lots of friends and everyone knew and loved him."

Mr Witt would go out on his boat to the lake and enjoyed trout fishing. Mrs Egidy recalled the smoked trouts Mr Witt brought back and shared with his friends were the best she had ever tasted.

Mrs Egidy said Mr Witt would be remembered for his generosity and helping look after elderly people or lend a hand wherever he could.

"It's very sad for us, we loved them dearly," Mrs Egidy said.

"We miss him and he will never be forgotten," she said.

"We're all hoping very, very much that Erica will be ok."

Son Markus Witt was too distressed to speak yesterday but added that Mrs Witt's condition was improving.

Simply a gentle soul with a generous heart. God look over her and her family in these troubling times.. and may we all pray for all those involved.
