Skiing death at Perisher

10 Aug, 2010 12:19 PM
A SYDNEY journalist died at Perisher on Sunday morning after hitting a tree while skiing.

He was Michael Meagher, 55, a former television journalist with Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports and Business Sunday programs.

He was on a family skiing holiday when the accident happened on Wombat’s Run, which is an intermediate level.

Police said he suffered head injuries and died at the scene.

Mr Meagher had previously worked with The Australian newspaper, The Bulletin magazine and BRW magazine. More recently he worked as an adviser for CPR, a corporate communications firm.

The Perisher Blue resort chief executive Peter Brulisauer said the small community was shocked and saddened by Mr Meagher’s death.

He extended his condolences to Mr Meagher’s family.

“Skiing together with your family in these conditions is a wonderful activity but in this instance it has unfortunately ended so tragically.”

A spokesperson for the resort said deaths through skiing or snowboarding were rare, with only one

death every 1.5 million skier days.
