Snow falls on snow chain submissions

26 Feb, 2009 10:56 AM
SUBMISSIONS for the Roads and Traffic Authorities (RTA) controversial proposal to force 4WD vehicles to carry snow chains to and from the ski fields on March 1.

Tourism promotions manager Caroline Fox said so far a number of Cooma-Monaro submissions had been collated and sent to the RTA and Minister for Roads.

In 2008 the RTA released a discussion paper outlining its intention to require all AWD and 4WD vehicles to carry chains unless fitted with snow tyres on expanded snow and ice risk sections on all roads accessing the NSW alpine resorts.

These expanded sections include the ski tube and if the current proposal passes this could be implemented as early as winter 2010.

Ms Fox said some opponents of the proposal see the need to include the ski tube as nonsensical.

"The ski tube was built so that people did not have to carry chains to and from the ski fields," Ms Fox said.

"So I suppose in that sense some people would say the suggestion is questionable."

Ms Fox said a number of key stakeholders and organisations met with Tourism Snowy Mountains to form a united front and put forward some sensible solutions to the problem.

"That is what I find really admirable about this, is that, they haven't just said no this is not going to work but that they have tried to work with the police, RTA and National Parks to come up with some really good solutions," Ms Fox said.

"Everybody agrees road safety is of very high importance, nobody argues that.

"It is local groups on a local level working together with the RTA, police and National Parks to put forward some solutions and suggestions to improve the road safety for all users."

Some of the suggestions include the spreading of road grit in areas where salt is ineffective, constructing snow fences to minimise drift, lower speed zones from 80km per hour in winter to 50km per hour, signage exiting key towns to communicate to road users the road conditions, increase the number of chain fitting bays to ease congestion and greater police visibility.

Ms Fox said she hoped the submission would be received and considered.

Actually, Skitube was built so people didn't have to DRIVE to Perisher and Blue Cow, at ANY time of year; it was not snow related.
