Snowy's water woes continue

02 Jul, 2009 12:07 PM
STAKEHOLDERS will meet in Cooma on July 22 to discuss the future of the Snowy River.

Member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly, NSW Minister for Water Phillip Costa and Member for Gippsland Craig Ingram will meet with other stakeholders at the council chambers from 11am.

Snowy River Alliance secretary Vickii Wallace believes the river is in desperate need of help.

A decade ago the Federal, NSW and Victorian State Governments reached an agreement to increase flows to the Snowy.

The agreement pledged $325 million to increase flows to the Snowy by 21 per cent in a bid to reverse decades of damage.

To date little has been done to reach those targets, Mrs Wallace said.

“We need to act fast if we are to save the iconic river system.

“Here we are expecting 15 per cent (flows) this year and getting four, it is a joke and an insult,” she said.

Mrs Wallace would like to see the agreement rewritten so water is held for the Snowy, the Mowamba borrowing’s account scrapped and the river’s flows topped up from stores in the Moonbah River.

“If the Snowy is not going to get its water why should it be expected to repay any water?” Mrs Wallace said.

“Ninety nine per cent of the Snowy’s water was taken for over 40 years. These governments, especially NSW, need to get honest with the Snowy, the public and the job they set out to do.”
