Thieves wanted

25 Oct, 2007 11:53 AM
A $3200 mountain bike was stolen from the Bombala Street Surgery earlier this week in the second theft in Cooma's central business district in as many days.

The surgery's security alarm was activated at 6:20am on Tuesday morning after the wooden door at the back of the premises was busted open.

Doctors Hamish Steiner and Andrew Egan arrived to find Dr Egan's bone-coloured, $3200 Mongoose mountain bike missing.

"I had been riding it to work for fitness - I had got home late the night before so it was too dark to ride home," said Dr Egan.

"They've left the axle there - it's unrideable without that.

"It's quite possibly going to end up in the creek somewhere."

Dr Egan is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the return of his bike, which he bought six months ago.

He is unsure whether the thieves came specifically to take the bike, which was visible from a window, or intended to take other things but fled when the surgery alarm was activated.

The theft occurred the day after thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and property was stolen or destroyed at Sharp Street business Percy Communications.

A spokesperson from Cooma police called on anyone who witnessed either of the thefts, or has seen a bike matching the description of Dr Egan's, to report to police.

"At this stage there's been two in two days on local businesses and that's unusual for this area," the spokesperson said.

Anyone with information about the thefts can contact Cooma Police on 6452 0099.

Calls can be anonymous.
