Unusual Sharp Street treat

19 Jun, 2008 11:53 AM
Cooma residents will be given a rare opportunity to glimpse something a little unusual pedalling through Sharp Street on Saturday when 20-year-old Mark Lavis scoots through on his unicycle.

The second year Industrial Relations Student from the Australia National University in Canberra wanted to something fun and raise money for the Afghan mobile mini circus for children (AMMCC) at the same time.

Mr Lavis will begin the 2000 kilometre journey from the Afghani embassy in Canberra to Adelaide on Friday and hopes to reach Cooma by midday on Saturday.

The AMMCC runs a primary school in Kabul for 350 students and uses the medium of circus arts and theatre to teach children about health and safety and tolerance as part of its sports curriculum.

"When your dealing with kids at risk who don't have much self esteem, unicycling is important because it teaches them that with practice and persistence they can conquer the impossible," he said.

For Mr Lavis he is not focusing on the gruelling journey ahead but on the positive outcomes of his adventure.

"To me its just another adventure where I can try and achieve what I've been teaching, that hard work and persistence can pay off," he said.

The four week trip through Melbourne to Adelaide will be completed on an off road unicycle, not your stock standard unicycle Mr Lavis said but still just as challenging.

"Unicycle.com gave me a good deal on my unicycle, its got a larger wheel than normal so you can cover a larger distance a bit quicker, but its not an easy art because there's still only one wheel," he said.

"It's tough going on your feet because you have to peddle all the time."

For Mr Lavis he is not focusing on the gruelling journey ahead but on the positive outcomes of his adventure.
