Upsets in Cooma bowls continue

21 Oct, 2008 09:45 AM
THE run of surprise results in championship matches at the Cooma Bowling Club continued on the weekend with the inexperienced team skipped by Bob Lahy recording a win over Peter Constantinou.

The game was the highlight of another busy weekend that saw 44 players fill one green on Saturday and several teams travel to the Bombala tournament.

In the championship match Robbie Roberson, Andrew Caldwell and Mick Mellion joined Lahy to take on Jack Sajina, Ray Downey, Tony Brooks and Peter Constantinou.

Constantinou and Brooks were the remaining members of the side that won this title last year and their team started the game as favourites.

Constantinou's team had the better of the early ends winning five of the first seven, but their advantage was restricted as they dropped nine shots on the two ends that they lost.

Lahy then took control of the match winning the next five ends to open up an 18-12 lead after 12 ends.

Constantinou fought back and as the teams played the last end the score was 22-20 in Lahy's favour.

Lahy ended a worthy winner by 23-20. All four members of his team contributed to the win with new comer Robbie Roberson worthy of special mention in only his second competition game.

In Bombala, Cooma bowlers gained some consolation after losing the Patrons' Cup last week by taking out the Bombala RSL carnival.

Paul Schulz, John Schoon and Peter Caldwell won the major prize being the only side to win all of their four games.

Bill McDonald, Denis Steinfort and Neil McGregor's team just missed out on the money after winning three of their four games.

There were six games of triples for social bowls on Saturday, which saw Sue Wright, Hazel Walker and Keith Goodwin have a 22-20 win over Betty Longhurst, Margherita Zasso and Laine Wright.

In another very close game Sandro Wialletton, Chris Wallace and Jim Fletcher won the battle of the 'drivers' against Phil Biggam, Jason Thompson and Colin Roberson, 16-14.

Gary Douch, Max Povey and Owen Russell held the upper hand throughout their match with Maureen D'Amico, Allan Crowe and Alby Marshall running out victors 24-17.

Lorraine West, Richard Nichols and Paul Cannell were able to beat Olga Jebbink, Peter Longhurst and Terry Croker 22-15 on the back of three ends where they scored four shots.

Simon Schoon, George Davidson and Jack Parsons were too consistent for Ken Boate, Sergio Roncelli and Tony Gray taking out their game 24-12.

In the final game Arthur McIntosh, Leonie Snell and Dave Paul had too much firepower for John Last, Daphne Fraser and Don Jarvis, winning 31-16.
