The number of junior basketball players has hit the stadium roof with a renewed interest in the game.
Cooma mini basketballers gathered at the stadium on Saturday for a presentation day. Players took part in games and drills before receiving a trophy, basketball and Halloween treat each.
Organiser Betty Longhurst said it was a successful day.
“The kids had a good time,” she said.
Mrs Longhurst said it is pleasing to see how the game is growing on the Monaro.
“We have about 60 junior girls playing and the boys numbers are also growing,” she said.
Mrs Longhurst said she was unsure of the reason for the rise in numbers but that there are plenty of opportunities to play.
“We have junior boys comp on Mondays where our numbers in recent times have doubled and social women’s on Thursday afternoons,” she said.
Mrs Longhurst said it was good to see the children getting so much enjoyment from the sport.
“It keeps me motivated to keep helping them,” she said.
Mrs Longhurst wished to thank the sponsors for the day, Herman and Co for the BBQ, Robyn Shannon and Taiha for looking after the canteen.
Mrs Longhurst was very appreciative of the support with many parents attending on the day. She also wanted to thank the senior and junior players for their assistance and to Colleen Catalano for the raffle.
“The effort put in by all was great, everyone stepped up,” she said.
Mrs Longhurst said the children were also very appreciative of their prizes.
“Many of these kids don’t have a basketball, so now they all have one to go home and practice with,” she said.
The youngsters will now take a break until March.
