Cooma athletes take on NSW All Schools

12 Nov, 2009 09:44 AM
A trio of Cooma Athletes competed at the NSW All Schools Championships in Sydney recently and Tim Burgess came home with the gold when he took out the 16 yrs Hammer Title with a throw of 30.79m.

Tim moved up a weight division from last year where he was throwing 4 kg to a 5kg Hammer this year. We are waiting to see if this performance entitles him to be selected for the NSW Team for Australian All Schools in Tassie.

Tim also entered the 100m, 200m 400m. In the 100m Tim drew the fastest heat in spite of running close to his PB of 12.30sec, he found himself at the rear of the pack. When the times were tallied Tim was 34th over all. He faired better in the 200m where he finished in 23rd placing overall with a time of 24.82 sec. In the 400m Tim broke the minute mark and finish 15th overall. He also contested the Triple Jump and managed 9.90m and 15 placed.

Naomi Burgess contested events in the 17yrs girls competition. Naomi, who has been plagued by injuries and illness over the past two seasons, seems to be on the way back to her best. Naomi ran a very good time of 15.39m in the 100m Hurdles final to be just behind the place getters in 5th place. This also gave her another qualifying time for the Australian All Schools next month in Hobart.

Naomi picked a silver medal in the 17 Girls Hammer Throw with a toss of 31.18m, well down on her PB. She raced in the 400m Hurdles to clock a very slow time of 1m 20.77 sec, over 10 seconds slower than best from last season. Another event that Naomi usually performs well in when she fit is the High Jump but this season having problems in clearing 1.50 mts and at the weekend only managed 1.45m.

The third member of the trio was Kirralee England. Kirralee, 16, is finding it hard to match the other girls in her age group. Kirralee contested most of the field events and was place 5th in the Discus with a heave of 16.10m down nearly 3m on her PB. Again, in the Shot Put Kirralee was well below par with 5.80m, gaining her 7th overall. In the Long Jump Kirralee only managed 3.78m giving her 11th placing. She also tried her hand at Triple Jump.
