Athletics through the generations

New generations of Cooma athletes have taken over the little athletics mantle that many of their parents dominated in the 80's and 90's.

Some of the parents who now have children competing include Kristy Mauier,(nee Brooks)Lisa Dyball,(nee Mackay)Kylie Harmer,(nee Byrne)

Nolita Johnson(nee Batie) and Shane Johnson.

Kristy and Lisa still hold records from their little athletics competition days, these are mentioned below.

Kristy's records include: U/8 High Jump 1.05m in 1985

U/14 Shot Put 10.38m in 1992

U/14 Discus 27.98m in 1992

Lisa's records include: U/10 400m 1.13.30sec in 1984

U/10 800m 2.51.85sec in 1983

U/11 400m 1.08.40sec in 1985

U/13 400m 1.06.10sec in 1987

U/13 1500m 5:30.00sec in 1986

U/14 200m 28.12sec in 1987

U/14 400m 1.04.28sec in 1987

U/14 800m 2.30.88sec in 1987

Nolita Johnson said she really enjoyed her time in little athletics. "I was lucky enough to go to state competitions and it was getting out there and having a go," she said.

Kylie Harmer believes it is something that every child should be encouraged to participate in.

"It provides a chance for children to get into exercise and make new friends," she said.
