Coffey's caught out on the pitch

02 Feb, 2010 12:22 PM
IT was the game Coffey’s would rather forget with a number of dropped catches costing them the match against Aussie 1 on Saturday.

Things started out well for Coffeys, who thought the run total of 119 would be enough to get them over the line that was until they took to the field.

James “Jimmy” Nichols opened and added 19 to the total before Nathan Smith bowled him. A solid partnership was formed with Chris Fitzgerald who added 21.

Aussie 1’s Paul Sheen said the game started to turn once Jimmy was out.

“He’s probably the backbone of their side, Nathan took the wicket that ultimately turned the match,” he said.

Daniel Shirvington was on fire with the ball for Aussie 1 taking four for 18 off nine overs and was instrumental in helping Troy Saddler reach his 63 with the bat.

Nathan Smith stepped up to the plate again when Aussie took to the crease adding 27 to the total. Sheen said Saddler was lucky to reach 63 after he was dropped numerous times.

“We’re just lucky that our poor fielding didn’t cost us the match. Our fielding was probably equally as poor.”

Coffey’s Ryan Morgan tried to tidy up Aussie 1 taking three for 25 off seven overs but it was too little too late. Aussie 1 running away with the win seven for 126.

Coffey’s Fred Nichols was disappointed with how the side played, but remained optimistic for future matches.

“There’s always next week. We’re coming up against the young guys from Aussie 2 soon and we’re looking forward to that.”
