Four horses from Bredbo took part in a feature meeting of the Canberra Harness Racing Club (CHRC) conducted on Saturday, February 8. They were part of a six-horse parade of ridden standardbreds to showcase 'life after racing' for retired pacers. The six horses are all standardbreds that are either owned or formally trained by the Manning family in Bredbo.l
Pieta Manning from Kalimbah Standardbreds organised the parade in conjunction with the CHRC to promote the breed as versatile and trainable saddle horses.
"It was a successful event for us. It was wonderful to be able to showcase former racehorses, who have then gone onto doing trail ridding or pony club," she said.
Ms Manning has been retraining standardbreds to saddle for more than three years and has horses riding all over NSW.
Her eight-year-old son, Justin rode former racehorse Max, who Ms Manning said was the star of the show.
"Max last rode in a race in June last year after it was deemed he wasn't fast enough. In just over six months off the track this special little horse has moved on to new things," she said.
The event was not without drama, with the resolve of the horses being tested.
"We started off parading down towards the grandstand the big water truck came around the track and was spraying water and dragging the grader, amazingly all the horses coped," she said.
