Opposition sees red in junior rugby

30 Jun, 2009 09:50 AM
With no senior rugby played last weekend it was up to the juniors to fly the red flag for the devils and the youngsters did so proudly scoring three wins from four junior matches.

The under 11s scored what in the end was a comfortable 37 to 20 points victory over a tough St Edmund’s outfit. Leading 17-7 at the break the devils were able to go on with the job in the second half with Dylan van Germent, Blake Rixon, Liam Allen and Luke Rixon leading by example.

Coach Chris Allen said the win was achieved by playing patient rugby.

“Eddies are a strong side but we showed good pace out wide, our forward matched up very well against what was a much bigger pack and our backs did the rest,” he said.

Allen praised Luke Rixon who performed a feat that is unusual for a young player.

“Luke kicked the first field I have seen at this level in four or five years,” he said.

The under 12s combined Cooma and Rosary side took on Queanbeyan and came away with a 22-10 win. Coach James Larritt said it was a good match.

“We played well, our forwards did a good job and everyone tackled well,” he said.

Despite being down 10-5 at half time, Larritt said the Under 12s side lifted in the second half scoring three tries all in the forwards with strong ruck play the key to victory.

“It was a good lift from the week before when we lost by 5 points, we kept hold of the ball which enabled us to put on points,” he said.

Darcy Larritt took out the encouragement award while Chris Tuck was praised for staying strongly in position throughout the match.

In other matches the Under 15’s went down to Trinity Goulburn 36 points to 14 while the Under 15s had an emphatic 54-17 victory over Uni-Norths.
