Sim's Olympic dream

18 Sep, 2008 12:29 PM
BUNYAN-raised cross-country skier Ben Sim has set his sights on the ultimate event of international competition - the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Sim confirmed his aspiration in an exclusive interview with the Express this week, saying the Winter Olympics was the ultimate ambition for any winter sport's competitor.

"I see the Olympics as the biggest sporting achievement and main goal for any athlete during their life," Sim said.

"Everyday when I train I start thinking about the Olympics," he said.

As a newcomer to the World Cup in 2005, a less experienced Sim sought to compete in the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, but failed to qualify.

Now, with three years' experience under his belt and a number of gold medals at the international level, Sim said he felt confident he could qualify for 2010.

"Last time I went in as a young kid and didn't know what to expect, but it was tough and not easy to qualify.

"Since then my eyes have opened to the international level of competition and I've developed so much more, not so much physically, but mentally," he said.

Sim has been keeping up the level of training and participation in international and national competitions, recently taking out the Kangaroo Hoppet at Falls Creek and performing well in the Australia New Zealand Cup, in New Zealand.

After Australia's winter season wraps up Sim will travel to Russia, Europe and the North American continent to train and compete in Northern Hemisphere World Cup events.

"I will leave for Alaska in December for a month and on January 16 will compete in a World Cup event in Vancouver, which is important, as it is the site for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

"In January and February I will also compete in World Cup events in Russia, Estonia and Italy, and I will also compete in the 2009 World Championships in the Czech Republic, and World Cup events in Finland and Sweden in March," he said.

Sim said he hoped to head to Alaska in April to train with a professional team until August 2009, to further develop his skills and increase his chances of being selected for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
