Back in action

After a lengthy lay-off due to holidays and the bye the mighty Colts under six side returned to the playing field at home to the Queanbeyan Blues.

The rest obviously inspired all of the team as they were ready to play before the Blues had even put their jumpers on.

Ben Freebody led the team on and after winning the toss the Colts made a couple of vital handling errors, letting the Blues in for two easy tries.

The game-faces quickly returned and after good lead-up work, tries to Glenn Payne and Luke Johnson had the Colts back in the game.

Solid defence and strong running from Dean Blyton, Tim Caldwell and Scotty Digges saw the game move from one end of the field to the other with some excellent tries being scored by both teams.

Meg Bracher, Josh McDonald and Kirk Patton all showed great involvement and paced themselves well for the final stanza.

After some stern looks to the coach for the oranges at the last break, the final third was played at a frantic pace.

Hard running from Jack Williams saw him bump off tacklers to score two tries, while Luke Johnson stepped through the entire Blues team to score his second.

Glenn Payne was scoring at will from all parts of the field and ended up with a total of five tries.

Final score was Colts 45, Blues 35.

It was an excellent performance by all of the team and by far their best performance of the year. The players'-player went to Ben Freebody and the McDonald's award went to Glenn Payne. The mighty Colts are at home again next week against the Knights at 9.50am.

THE under sevens travelled to Kambah to take on the Tuggeranong Buffaloes.

The young Colts started off at a cracking pace with two tries, one each to Lochie and Blayne who also converted his own try, to lead 10-0.

Buffaloes soon hit back, scoring three tires and converting two goals, with the Buffaloes leading 19-10.

This only seemed to spur the boys on, with some outstanding tackling by Joel, Dean, Mitchell and Vincent, followed up by some elusive running by Blake, Zane, Luke and Cameron, setting up a strong platform for Blayne to score three runaway tries with another conversion to Luke.

Cooma eventually ran out winners 27-19.

Players'-player went to Blake "Brusier" Byrne and the McDonald's award went to Lochie Fitzgerald. Well done boys.

THE Cooma Colts under eight side took on a very strong and fast South Tuggeranong side at home on Sunday.

Williame, Dan, Ashley and Jack started off the game by making great runs towards the try line and this resulted in Jack crossing the line for the first try of the game.

Kris took the conversion successfully.

Alexander, Jacob and Jake kept the Tuggeranong side in Cooma's half by making great tackles.

The good defence saw Tuggeranong lose the ball and Kris took advantage of their mistake and scored his first try of the day, Jake was unsuccessful with the conversion.

Dane, Jake, Ashley and Daniel made good runs in the second period but the Tuggeranong defence kept Cooma scoreless.

Jacob started off the last third by scoring a try not long after kick off.

The boys missed some easy tackles which resulted in Tuggeranong scoring three easy tries.

On the bell Cooma crossed the line to score the final try of the day. Jack took the conversion successfully and the final score was 39-18 to Tuggeranong.

Team player of the day went to Daniel Clarke for his great tackling and the encouragement award from McDonald's went to Williame Lee.

Oh what a feeling. Cooma 26, visitors nil. The scoreline says it all.

Last Sunday was like a beautiful spring morning and it only got better, when the under 11s came off the Cooma Showground after playing West Belconnen and keeping them tryless.

The opening stanza was pretty torrid and the Cooma boys weren't helped by a few dropped balls and an unusually high penalty count against them (sorry Chip, I know, the outside backs were off side).

But the boys kept at it and after 10 minutes they held the ball and Todd Mould started a good backline move that saw the ball turned back inside to Daryl Bains who shook off two tackles to score.

Try scorers on the day were Daryl Bains with two, Todd Mould and Bradley Fitzgerald one try each.

All tries were converted and the two-pointers were scored by David Wybrew, Bradley Fitzgerald, James Boller and Joe Dorahy.

The players'-player award went to Clark Sogal for a great effort especially in defence and the Maccas awards went to the whole team for what was possibly their best effort of the year. Just a reminder that training is now on Thursday afternoon at 4.15pm. Again, well done boys.

COOMA travelled to Kaleen on Sunday ready for a hard battle against the North Canberra Bears.

Cooma's pattern of three forward hit-ups and then swift service to the backs saw Cooma take a 10-0 lead after tries to Jonathon Clarke and a barnstorming run by Nathan "Willie" Whiteman.

A conversion from out wide by Luke Taylor had the team confident to score more tries.

Playing with only 12 men, Cooma had to dig deep and a try to Nicholas Moon and a 50 metre effort by captain Clarke saw Cooma take a hard earned 18-7 lead into half-time.

The boys braced themselves for a tough second half and were not disappointed as the Bears came out firing to score two tries and take a 19-18 lead with time running out.

Injuries saw Cooma reduced to 11 men for the majority of the second half.

With the Bear's having an automatic two man overlap, resolute defence from all the boys frustrated the Bears into some welcome errors.

Cooma's "old heads" in Sam Williams, Locky Schofield and Andrew Boller played some solid footy.

Strong runs from Whiteman, Taylor and Sam Alcock set play up for Mitchell Simpson to burst onto the ball to score what was to be the winning try.

Strong defence from Clinton Riley, Ricky Brazulaitis and a memorable tackle from Clarke, who was everywhere, saw Cooma hold onto a thrilling 21-19 lead.

The boys deserve a big well done on a great all round team effort.

Thanks to the parents and supporters who follow our team all round Canberra. The coaching staff and the players really appreciate your efforts.

Team player this week went to Matthew Shaw, man of match to Jonathon Clarke, two points to Mitchell Simpson, and one point to Clinton Riley and Sam Alcock.

Please be at training by 4pm ready to go on Thursday dressed in jerseys and trackies or footy shorts. Everyone needs to look good for the television and special guest coach.
