Tigers hope Farah will show Marshall re-signing is best

13 Jan, 2009 11:30 PM

WESTS TIGERS coach Tim Sheens hopes the re-signing of hooker Robbie Farah until the end of 2013 will help persuade Benji Marshall to turn his back on "a lot of money" being offered for the Kiwi international to switch codes and play rugby overseas.

After six weeks of changing his mind "a million times a day", Farah - who has also been given the captaincy - finally agreed to stay with the Tigers for another four years after his current contract expires at the end of this year, turning down a lucrative offer to rejoin former Tigers Scott Prince and Anthony Laffranchi at the Gold Coast.

"They have been in my ear a fair bit and Princey has been doing his best to get me up there," Farah said yesterday. "It was a tough decision and I'm glad it's over now and I can get some sleep. You hear a lot of opinion from people close to you, your family and friends, some telling you to go, some telling you to stay, and in your own head you change your mind a million times a day. But when it came down to it I couldn't bear to leave the club. For me, in the end, my heart made my decision and it was really too hard to leave the club that I have played for since I was a kid."

Sheens said it was good for Farah's peace of mind and to "settle the water around the team" that he had made his decision now. But, he added, there were more players to sign, with Marshall, whose contract expires at the end of the year, among those. He said the club and Marshall hoped to have the matter sorted out before the start of the season.

"I think Benji, like Robbie, wants to sort it out soon," Sheens said. "Robbie's been here right through the summer, whereas Benji has been away on holiday after the World Cup, so that's probably the next issue for the club to sort out.

"I think all good players staying at the club helps another good player stay at the club and Robbie signing will help [keep and attract] others players as well.

"Benji has indicated he wants to do it as soon as possible. He does, of course, have other issues, not NRL clubs, but from other codes and, as I said, he's been away. There has been ongoing discussions with his management and we'll start negotiations over the next few days.

"He and I have had a bit of a talk about him switching codes. The major thing that rugby offers him is probably money, it's as simple as that, the same with the boys who have gone, because you're not necessarily going to represent the All Blacks from overseas. It really is the money and it's a lot of money and you don't throw that away given the world economy, let alone rugby league and our economy and what we can offer him over here with the salary cap … But I think he wants to play league and I think he wants to continue to build with that New Zealand side.

"… He's had a very tough couple of years which he seems to be pulling himself out of now, with an injury-free season last year as far as his shoulders were concerned and a good finish to the season. He's got a fair bit to still do in the game before he starts considering other things. But, injuries have also shown him that your career is short."
