EDITOR: I think that everyone who, last week, was able to inspect the amazing transformation of old BEC/ Army Drill Hall into a wonderful University centre, would have been excited about what Snowy Hydro have financed for the region. It is the best thing that has happened in Cooma for many years, and it may, and we think will, help stem the brain drain from the community, caused by our young people having to leave town to further their studies, and not coming back.
This is a huge step in the making of Cooma into a tertiary education town. This has major implications for those "tree changers" in the city, who see Cooma as a great place to live, but without the facilities of tertiary education. I am told that over 50 per cent of secondary school students now go onto university.
We should not forget those who had the foresight to make sure that the old Army Drill Hall's ownership was transferred to the Shire without cost.
Hearty congratulations to Snowy Hydro and to Cooma Monaro Shire for this great achievement and their working closely together for the betterment of the Monaro community.
