Cooma's version of Dancing with the Stars, organised by the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research (MCCR), is being recognised with two nominations at the Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) awards.
It was one of the biggest fundraising events Cooma has seen. Eleven local identities, or stars, spent months learning a dance routine with a professional dancer to be performed in front of hundreds of people in May this year.
Their goal was to raise as much as they could for cancer research- and that they did. With the community's help the event raised more than $185,000.
The MCCR is now up for two CAT awards. They have been nominated for the 'In the Spirit of the Community Award' and the 'Best Production of a Variety Show' award.
The nominations were announced on Monday night at Teatro Vivaldi in Canberra.
MCCR president Sandy Schofield along with members of the committee were there at the announcement. Mrs Schofield said they were very excited and proud to be nominated.
"It really is a community award if we take it out," she said.
"It's for those who supported the event, the dancers, the stars and the community.
"It's recognition for the community of what we've done and achieved."
The MCCR are up against five other nominees in both categories.
The winner will be announced at the 18th CAT Awards Gala to be held at Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music on Saturday February 16.
