Brown Mountain open for holidays

COOMA holiday makers and Nimmitabel businesses welcomed the lifting of traffic restrictions on Brown Mountain in time for the Christmas and New Year break.

Traffic had been restricted to one lane on the mountain while extensive road works were carried out after a major landslip in 2010.

Two lanes on the Snowy Mountains Highway re opened for the holiday season after roadwork on the highway was suspended from December 21.

Many families use the Snowy Mountains Highway to travel between Canberra, Cooma and the south coast during the holidays, with high traffic volume at peak times.

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has been carrying out maintenance work on a retaining wall at Brown Mountain between Bemboka and Nimmitabel, about 400 metres below Pipers Lookout.

A 60 metre section of the outer embankment of the road is being restored after being eroded by a number of severe storms since 2010.

Work being carried out includes a new outer face for the embankment, repairs to the road shoulder and re-installation of guard rail.

Traffic will be restricted to one lane again when the RMS recommences roadworks on January 7.

Work on Brown Mountain is expected to be completed in late February 2013.
