Stallions welcome international recruits

With the rugby league season just around the corner, the Cooma Stallions have welcomed their latest international recruits from England.

Sam Dowsett and Tom Holmes arrived in Australia last Thursday.

The pair, both 20, will join a strong Stallions line up this season.

Dowsett is a hooker or half back and Holmes is a second rower.

When approached to play in Australia they said it was an easy decision.

"It was pretty hard to turn down," Dowsett said.

"It's a dream to come over here and play in Australia."

The pair hail from Cumbria in north west England where they play for Askam Rugby League Club and can't wait to hit the field with their new team mates.

"We can't wait to get training but we need to acclimatize first," Dowsett said.

"It was minus one when we left home," Holmes said.

Despite their age, they come to the club with a high level of experience, both having represented Great Britain under 19s last year with a tour of Serbia.

They said while they bring to the club experience playing at a high level they were also hoping the learn some new things while at the Stallions.

The Stallions have had a strong affiliation with English clubs in the past.

In 1978 Tony Miller from England guided the Stallions to the grand final as captain coach and later in 1983 Charlie Elkin from Barrow played for the Stallions.

Stallions club president Craig Schofield played in Barrow in 1984.

He stayed in touch with fellow players from the club over the years and met up with the Dowsett and Holmes while on a trip to England last year.

Schofield said it was great to have the new "pommies" playing at the club.

He said the new recruits would add a lot of interest in the club around town.

By trade Dowsett is a mechanic and Holmes is a pipe fitter fabricator. Both have working visas and are willing to apply their trades in Australia or take on labouring jobs.

Stallions sponsor jumper night

The Cooma Stallion's Football Club would like to invite sponsors to join them for what promises to be a very exciting year for Rugby League in the region.

The club's first get together will be the annual Sponsor Jumper night which will be held at the Cooma Ex-Services Club, Coombah Lounge on Friday February 1 commencing at 7pm. Light refreshments will be served and there will be lucky door prizes on offer!

Sponsors will have the opportunity to meet and chat with the 2013 coaching team Steven Dunn First Grade, Paul Lloyd Reserve Grade, Nathan Smith under 18s and Craig Schofield Ladies League Tag and also get a chance to meet all the players as all four grades will be in attendance as well as the new Stallions in town including the two English imports before the draw for jumpers begins.

The club has once again secured Mainstreet to provide the 2013 kits. Simon and Alicia Bolton have already begun the groundwork to enable the jerseys to be finished on time for the season kick-off. To help them meet the deadline, it is imperative to have all sponsors finalised on or before the jumper night.

There is extra incentive for sponsor who attend the night will be given the opportunity for a first grade jumper. If you are unable to attend, please send a representative.
