Dancing with the Cooma Stars, run by the Monaro Committee for Cancer Research Inc (MCCR) has won a prestigious Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) Award.
Members of the MCCR committee accepted the ‘In the Spirit of the Community Award’ at the CAT Awards ceremony in Canberra on Saturday.
Eleven local stars rehearsed dance routines with professional dancers, performing with them in front of huge crowds in May last year and raising over $183,000 for cancer research.
A large group of MCCR committee members, dancers and stars attended the awards.
MCCR president Sandy Schofield said the win came as a surprise.
“It was totally unexpected,” she said. “We didn’t think we’d get it when we saw the other award nominees.”
She said the award was recognition for the whole of Cooma and the town’s community spirit.
“We are really excited for the community. We are finally being recognised for our awesomeness as a community.
“Everybody is willing to pitch in, and help out and are very giving. It’s a great place to live.”
Member for Monaro John Barilaro, who presented the award, said he was enormously proud of the contribution the MCCR made to the region for the benefit of cancer patients and their families.
