MORE than 600 streetlights will be replaced with new energy efficient lighting under a program that is expected to reduce council's carbon footprint and save up to $15,000 a year.
Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has teamed up with Essential Energy in a joint project to replace inefficient streetlights.
The program was developed by Essential Energy, in conjunction with its specialist energy management team, energyanswers, to assist local councils across NSW to achieve cost and environmental efficiencies, and improve public lighting.
Regional general manager, south eastern, Phillip Green, said the program was part of Essential Energy's existing Bulk Lamp Replacement program.
"We identified more than 600 streetlights that were suitable for energy efficient lighting upgrades in the Cooma Monaro Council area," Mr Green said.
Essential Energy contractors are scheduled to commence the task of removing the older inefficient lamps in March, replacing them with new energy efficient fluorescent or sodium lights.
"Council can expect a number of community benefits from switching to energy efficient luminaires, including reducing their carbon footprint, saving on energy bills and better value for ratepayers," Mr Green said.
"The lights will reduce council's carbon footprint by an estimated 100 tonnes of CO2-e per year, or the equivalent of taking around 30 cars off the road."
Mr Green said that the new streetlights comply with the Australian Public Lighting Standards and offer a longer life expectancy than the existing lamps.
"Our local communities will continue to enjoy a safe and reliable streetlight service that delivers the same light output and while using around 40 per cent of the energy of the current lights," he said.
The estimated cost to council is $1,500 and may save up to $15,000 per annum, which will be used to offset energy charges.
