The summer squash competition is well underway and going well. There have been some standout performances by some of the B grade participants - and it has been very pleasing to see some new faces in the competition - particularly younger members.
In this week's competition Eloise Blanchard (Cooma Trophy and Gifts) played a five game match against Kristie Seears, eventually winning 3-2. On the same court young Darcy Clayton (Snowy Hydro) took on another up and coming youngster Alex Childs (Cooma Trophy and Gifts) and kept onlookers watching for 45 minutes before running out the winner 3-2. Well played boys!
Susan Walters (Cooma Crane Hire) has been doing very well this competition but had a battle on her hands with Larry Maat (Monaro Discount Tyres). She took the first 9-2, lost the next two 9-5 and 10-8, winning the next game 9-2. That took it to a two-all score. Susan and Larry pulled out all stops but Susan finally won the last game 10-8 - the last game was certainly worth watching.
Newcomers Brad Constance and Bryn Jones had a good match with Bryn (Hillross) defeating Brad (Hydraulinks Cooma) 3-1. Tony Potter (Kleven Spain) continued his winning run by defeating Jim Nichols (Mark Kenmir & Co.) Tony has shown he has the No. 2 spot sewn up this competition.
It has been great to see Steve Johnson come back into the competition after a break and his form has shown he will be moving up through the grades at a good rate of knots (as will Matt Shirvington and Sam Pearce). Very encouraging to see these younger players doing so well.
Thursday's results are as follows:
Kleven Spain 10 def. Mark Kenmir & Co. 8; Hillross 14 def. Hydraulinks Cooma 5;Monaro Discount Tyres def. Cooma Crane Hire 9 and Cooma Trophy and Gifts def. Snowy Hydro 6.
