BREAKING: Kelly silent on leadership spill

Labor MP for the bellwether seat of Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly – a previously-declared Kevin Rudd supporter – is unable so far to publicly comment on the Labor Party leadership spill.

Dr Kelly entered Parliament in the 2007 election that saw Mr Rudd swept into power.

During last year’s leadership challenge, he informed Prime Minister Julia Gillard that he would support Mr Rudd in his unsuccessful challenge.

However, this action didn’t appear to harm his career prospects as he was recently promoted from the position of Parliamentary Secretary for Defence to a full blown ministry responsible for Defence Materiel.

The seat of Eden-Monaro takes in Queanbeyan just outside Canberra and takes in parts of the NSW south coast and south to the Snowy Mountains.

The seat has traditionally been won by the party that takes power in a federal election.
