Two men covered head-to-toe in white overalls working on Mack's corner footpath on Thursday morning caught the attention of passers-by.
They were working on improvements to the corner as part of council's CBD improvement plan when they came across a piece of stormwater pipe that looked 'suspect,' council's director of engineering services Linda Nicholson said.
Mrs Nicholson said it was not clear if the pipe work was asbestos but, just to be safe, the workers took the appropriate precautions and followed procedure as if it were.
She said they wet down the small section of pipe about 1.5 metres long pipe and 150mm in diameter, so the particles could not become airborne, if it was asbestos.
They blocked off the footpath, removed the pipe, removed the soil around the pipe and placed it in a bag which was taped up and taken to the Cooma tip and disposed of accordingly.
