Cooma reserves travelled to Moruya on Sunday, quietly confident of surprising the Bega Roosters, who have had the wood on them for the majority of the year.
With a positive attitude and simple game plan Cooma started just as they wanted, with strong defence, good enthusiasm and a willingness to commit to the job at hand.
After soaking up some early pressure, the Stallions completed sets and gained great field position with strong kicking games from Mitch Hynes and Dave Sommerville.
A couple of tries to Keith Robinson and Dave Sommerville along with super boot Mitch Hynes (7 from 7 goals for the day) saw Cooma skip out to an early 14 -0 lead.
To Bega's credit they hit back strongly and took the lead into the half time break 18-14. Cooma knew they had a fight on their hands against the never say die Roosters outfit!
The half time break was a chance to reiterate the importance of completing sets, communication in defence and who wanted the spot in the grand final the most.
The Cooma side did not disappoint, starting the second half in such a way that a few quick tries by the Stallions, thanks to the injection of the super subs from the bench.
Once again the 18s backing up, created havoc for Bega with their speed, enthusiasm and in general, their great ability to play the game hard.
Bega did not expect this, soon after dropping there heads and letting the hot conditions take its toll. Cooma continued to mount pressure and were rewarded with some great team tries, eventually establishing an unbeatable lead and running out winners 38-22.
They now have a week off waiting to see who their grand final opponents will be. This week's final between Bega and Eden will decide that. The Reserves will be eager to watch the game in Cooma this weekend, in order to help preparation and to stay levelled, knowing that job is still ahead of us to complete the task at hand and hold the premiers trophy aloft in a couple of weeks.
Congratulations to the under 18s and Fillies for setting the tone on the day, with two grinding wins to book there grand final berths. To the first graders, you have the full clubs support and along with our loyal supporters, we will be all there Sunday to help get you to grand final day.
