Highland Ground Spreading Under 11s
The Highland Ground Spreading under 11 Colts travelled to Canberra to play in the major semi-final against Queanbeyan United on a very hot Sunday. Cooma started very aggressively against the big Queanbeyan side with Nic Zusak finding a hole in the defence, to run 80 metres to score.
Queanbeyan hit back soon after and made the score 6 all. Cooma settled into their grinding defence which they have been working hard at over the weeks and it started to frustrate their opposition which caused them to start to drop the ball. Then Cooma started to capatalise on the mistakes with Noah Saddler and Nic Zusak scoring several tries. The Colts had an almost perfect record when converting their tries.
All the Cooma players really lifted and were very excited for the challenge with Will Cahill, Alec Miners, Jake Galvin, Noah Saddler and Tyler Rees with some very solid tackling. Ethan Conly, Jason Kelly, Travis Kelly, Eddie Clarke, James McGufficke, Colin Kingston and Josh Sharkey scrambled in defence and attack and never made a mistake.
The final score was Cooma 34 to Queanbeyan 16 in a fantastic effort which puts Cooma into the Grand Final at Bruce Stadium in two weeks. Now the boys await which team they will play out of Queanbeyan or the Buffaloes.
Franks Butchery Under 13s
Franks Butchery Under 13s travelled to Canberra on Sunday to play Gungahlin in the major semi-final.
Even though the boys had a week off last week, not one of them had forgotten the game plan. They all came out strong and played great football. The team welcomed Bill Zammit back to the side after being off injured and showed his strength barging over the line to score the first try, with Lachlan Inskip converting.
Cooma went on to score try after try and keep Gungahlin from getting possession of the ball. The Colts led 38-0 at half time.
Cooma seemed to tire with the heat letting Gungahlin score a few tries, though Cooma scored twice before full time leaving the score 48-24 points.
Try scorers for the day were Lachlan Inskip (2), Lachlan Jones (1), James Hill (1), James Cahill (1), Luke Day (2), Bill Zammit (2) and Lachlan Inskip converted 6 from 9 attempts. The boys will now be playing in the Grand Final under lights, at Canberra Stadium on September 14. The boys should all be proud of themselves, they played a great game of football and deserve their spot in the grand final.
