In this affluent community it may surprise some to learn that polio hasn't yet been eradicated in some parts of the world and it's one of the aims of Rotary to ensure its demise as soon as possible. A polio shot only costs $3 and a small group of Rotary-inspired motor bikers were in Cooma last week to publicise the End Polio Now campaign.
They started at Merimbula and rode up the coast, cutting across to the Southern Highlands, going through Goulburn, Yass, Tumut, Cooma and Bombala before returning to Merimbula for the Rotary District Conference at the weekend.
By their actions, they said, the group was demonstrating that Rotary was not comprised solely of middle-aged men in suits, but also people prepared to get out and about (some in bandannas) for a good cause.
In Cooma they were welcomed by members of the local Rotary Club before hitting the bitumen for the next leg of their trip.
