Cooma joined the fight against violence toward women last Friday night with a candlelight vigil in Centennial Park for 'Reclaim the Night'.
Reclaim the Night is an internationally held event to raise awareness of, and protest against, violence against women.
President of the Monaro Domestic Violence Committee and sexual assault worker at Cooma community health Caroline Coles said the event was aimed at dispelling myths about sexual assault and violence so people felt more comfortable talking about it.
"People are really scared to talk about it," she said.
"It is such a hidden problem. People don't report it because of the stigma and shame. This is about making the community more accepting and for people to get help.
Ms Coles said there were a number of ways to get help.
"We have a generalist counsellor at Cooma Community Health you can call on 6455 3201, or Monaro Crisis Accommodation Service 6452 6174 and of course there is the police," she said.
