Urgent repairs to the Bolaro Bridge on Bobeyan Road are underway, resulting in minor delays, partial closure and a proposed full closure of the bridge for a little over two weeks later next month.
The work was postponed in June following community opposition at the timing of the closure, during the ski season, and the lack of consultation.
While preliminary minor works began on Monday, timing of partial and full bridge closure will be discussed at a community meeting the following Monday.
A full bridge closure is scheduled from November 16 to December 1 to allow works to be undertaken.
There is also a proposed partial closure between 10am and 2pm from November 11 and November 15, and Monday December 2 and December 13.
Cooma-Monaro Shire Council's director of engineering services Linda Nicholson said the repairs were very urgent.
"We have already reduced the load limit on that bridge. It is particularly urgent with the wooden structure underneath decaying," she said.
"It does have to be done.
"We are keen to get it done before the bridge becomes permanently damaged and we have to have an unplanned closure."
Cooma-Monaro and Snowy River Shire Council has undertaken a detailed review of the factors affecting the work including flow releases into the river, traffic data and school holidays.
"At the community meeting we had in June there was a request to not have it done during the school holidays or during the ski season. It is also very dependent on releases from Tantangara and weather patterns. We have a very small window to work in," she said.
The timing of the partial and total bridge closure will be discussed at a community meeting on Monday November 4 at 2.30pm on site, at the Bolaro Bridge on the western side.
"The reason why we are having the meeting at the bridge, rather than a hall, is so people can see the issues and be familiar with what we are doing," Mrs Nicholson said.
During the proposed closure, traffic will be detoured via either Shannons Flat Road or the Snowy Mountains Highway through Cooma, or Yaouk Road to Adaminaby.
