Get fit and healthy in 2014

Achieving your New Year's resolution to get fit and healthy will be easy this year, with the completion of Cooma's fitness stations.

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has installed eight fitness stations located around Cooma, including Rotary Oval, Snowy Oval, Monaro High School, Cooma Creek and Nijong Oval.

Each of the sites has two pieces of equipment except for Rotary Oval which has four items.

The idea for the outdoor gym equipment was part of council's recreation strategy but a lack of funding meant the project could not start.

That was until a member of the recreational facilities committee Suzanne Dunning, who was passionate about the project, undertook to raise funds from the business community and others.

After doing the hard work of doorknocking Mrs Dunning obtained sponsorship from the following businesses and organisations; Rotary Club of Cooma, InVogue Homes, Snowy Hydro, Sharp Street Medical Centre, Bombala Street Medical Centre, Rhythm Sports, The Lott, Monaro Committee for Cancer Research, Cooma Cats AFL Club, Monaro Rural Health Service, Schoo's Studios, Monaro High School and Mark Kenmir.

Cooma-Monaro Shire Council also contributed the balance of funds and managed the design and construction.

The installation was carried out by the Council's Community Maintenance Team which comprises inmates from Cooma Correctional Centre supervised by a Council Team Leader.
