Cooma's Nick Wassink has been selected for the Athletics ACT State Team for the National Junior Championships in March after his performance at Athletics ACT Championships.
Nick picked up Gold and Silver medals in the under 16 age group, with a Personal Best throw in the Hammer Throw with heave 40.73 mts and 9.25 mts in the Shot Put.
He has been selected in the U16 Hammer Throw event at Australian Junior Championships March 12 to 16 in Sydney.
Nick has worked hard to reach this level of competition. His achievements since October 2013 include a second in NSW All School Championships in Sydney in October, first at the NSW Country Championships in Wollongong, Australia Day weekend and now first at Athletics ACT Championships.
Nick has broken the Cooma Little Athletics Centre under 15 Hammer throw three times this season plus the under 20 Hammer record (6kg) twice. He has also competed at the Athletics ACT Inter-Club only once, due to the restriction that the AIS have imposed on ACT Athletics.
Quinton Stead, Nick's coach, is expecting a marked improvement by Nick over the next 12-15 months as he improves in his technique and fitness levels. Stead has marked Nick down to be in the 50-60 mts range before he moves up into next weight division, which is 5kg as an under 18 thrower.
