Six local rugby league players had their final home game together on Friday, after 10 years playing for the Cooma Colts. Jack Williams, Josh Hogan, Dean Blyton, Glen Payne, Josh McDonald and Luke Johnson began playing together for the Cooma Colts under 6s in 2002 and have played together ever since. On Friday night, they put on their jerseys, and took to the field at the Cooma Showground for the under 16 Colts for the final time in front of their home crowd.
Over the years some of them have followed in the footsteps of previous Cooma Colts players who have gone on to the next level such as Sam Williams and Brett White. Five of the boys were invited to trial with the Canberra Raiders this year. They were Jack Williams, Luke Johnson, Josh Hogan, Glen Payne and Thomas Cronan, who joined the side in recent years.
Jack Williams and Thomas were selected and are now part of the Raiders squad. Josh Hogan and Luke Johnson have been accepted into the prestigious St Gregory's Boarding College in Sydney for next year, where they both hope to further their rugby league skills at a school with a strong record for producing talented rugby league players including local and current Raiders half back Sam Williams.
The boys said the highlight of their footy careers so far was making the grand final last year with their current coach Mark 'Camel' Harris. They would like to thank their parents, helpers and especially the coaches who have coached them over the past 10 years and team manager Diane Blyton who has supported the team since the start.
