Bushrangers snatch victory from Red Devils

Cooma Red Devils first grade took to the field on Saturday against Hall ready to make up for their first round loss two weeks ago to Goulburn.

They started with good intensity with the forwards finding metres through the middle of the field.

This allowed the Cooma backs room to run and they were also looking dangerous with Matthew Moxon, Nick Keighley and Ryan Morgan all making good metres with ball in hand. Hall was first to post points after they scored a run away try.

Cooma hit back after attacking down the short side with some quick hands between the forwards. James Strange found himself in open pastures with the line 20 meters away, unselfishly he passed to Nick Keighley who dived over in the corner.

Hall then hit back with another try which was converted to give them a 12-5 lead. Cooma levelled the score when Pat Egan dived over after strong runs from Ben Neilson, Leighton Bates and James Nichols. Ryan Morgan converted to level the scores and they remained level until half time.

The second half saw a game that ebbed and flowed back and forth with both sides having a chance to score more points but mistakes stopped these chances. Cooma was able to take the lead when Phil Johnson crashed over from a rolling maul.

Morgan again converted but Cooma switched off after the try and Hall hit back with a converted try of their own. This made for a very tense last 15 minutes.

With the scores locked both sides stepped up the intensity. Cooma took the lead with a successful penalty kick from Ryan Morgan with 10 minutes to go.

Cooma then defended their line as Hall applied plenty of pressure but with the last play of the game Hall were able to work a backline move off a scrum which saw their fullback score under the posts and Hall snatch victory on the bell to win the game 26-22. Points in first grade 1 point Ben Neilson, 2 points Matthew Moxon, 3 points and player's player Pat Egan.

Second grade

Second grade took to the field in what is usually a close game with both sides always giving 100 per cent.

Both sides started at a frantic pace and were making early mistakes.

Hall forwards were playing a very disruptive style of footy by lingering in the ruck's and disrupting Cooma's clean ball. Cooma were boosted by the return of Charlie McPhee from retirement and Steven Boate who dropped back from firsts to play half back.

These two added plenty of experience and were instrumental in pinching the ball off Hall and stopping a number attacking raids with solid defence.

Cooma was the first side to score points after strong runs from Matt Crowley, Damien Allen and Cade Graf which got Cooma into good field position.

Nathan Boate kicked a penalty goal to take a 3-0 lead.

This fired Hall up and they hit straight back with a try of their own.

With a couple of injuries Cooma had to shuffle players about which threw a few combinations out and that meant that Cooma dropped passes that they shouldn't of and got away from playing structured football.

Hall scored three tries either side of half time to get a comfortable lead but Cooma never gave up and scored a late try with the backs combining to put Andrew over in the corner.

Cooma applied a lot of pressure to Hall's line late in the game but couldn't score any more points with the final score been 33-8 to Hall.

Points in second grade 1 point Damien Allen, 2 points Matt Crowley, 3 points Charlie McPhee and player's player Damien Allen.
