AT the Athletics ACT's 1st of June High Meets this winter, Young Cooma Athlete Hayley Jones (12yrs) smashed a long standing record in the U/14 age group Hammer by throwing a personal best of 28.82mts.
Hayley's throw broke Hayleigh Wortley (another Cooma Girl) record by 6.62 mts, which stood at 22.27 mts and set in 2006.
This distance of 28.82 mts qualifies Hayley for Australian All Schools later this year. She has a hard road to actually getting to the Australian All Schools as she has to be winner of NSW All Schools Championships in October or be extremely close to winning throw, to be considered for the selection in NSW State Team for the Championships. The distance Hayley is likely to be throwing then is around high 38-39 metre mark.
At the meet on the weekend in the Hammer, one of Australian Men's Hammer representatives for Commonwealth Games was throwing. Hue Peacock (TAS) blastered the Hammer out over 67 metres. Also there was Tim Dressler (VIC) one of our Other Hammer representatives at the Game in Glasgow, who didn't compete due to a minor injury he is carrying. Tim is a 70 mts Thrower and we wish the Boys "All the Best" in Glasgow and in their quest to represent AUSTRALIA Athletics.
Also at the competition another Canberra Athlete Kara Baker U/18 lass broke her State Hammer Record producing a heave of 45.55 mts. Hayley, Kara and Kara's younger sister Jenna are all coach by Cooma Coach Tom Stead, who travels to Canberra each Sunday for their training sessions.
Hayley Jones also competed in the Discus and Shot Put where she performs well in the wet conditions that hampered all thrower in these events. Hayley's effort in the Discus (21.35 mts) and Shot Put (8.16 mts) looks promising as she heads to her School Zone competition in coming weeks.
