THE playground at Bent Street has been closed after bonded fibrous sheet material was discovered last week.
The material was identified on Friday during excavation work to replace an item of equipment at the playground.
A media release was issued by Cooma-Monaro Shire Council on Friday afternoon stating that in accordance with Council's Asbestos Management Policy the area had been secured until further investigation was undertaken.
"Accordingly, the Bent Street Playground has been closed until these investigations have been completed," the press release said.
"While these buried fragments are not considered to be a significant threat to the users of this playground, council is exercising all due caution to safely resolve this situation"
The fragments were found in the excavated soil at a depth of about 600mm below the soft fall material in the playground area.
